Cavity Wall Insulation

Cavity wall insulation in its most specific form is the insulation of a brick wall cavity. Generally a house built from the 1920’s onwards will have their external walls built from two skins of brickwork with a cavity in the void.  By insulating your cavity you will save energy and money in the long run when compared to the initial outlay for having the insulation installed. You will also reduce your CO2 emissions, thus have a beneficial effect on the environment and climatic change. Cavity wall insulation can also help reduce condensation on external walls.

In its more general form cavity wall insulation can incorporate any type of insulation used to fill or partially fill a void or cavity within a wall or partition.   

In order to insulate existing brick cavity walls, probably the easiest method is to install blown insulation. This is done by a procees of drilling holes in the walls and then pumping the insulation into the void.

One problem however with this method is getting cold spots in the wall where the insulation has not reached. This can be due to obstructions and debris in the cavity of the wall not allowing the insulation into all parts of the void.

On new build projects and refurbishments where the wall cavities can be accessed easier, a far more efficient method of insulating the cavity is with Mineral Wool and PIR Insulation.
