Fire Protection Products

Passive Fire Protection Products are building materials that passively protect a building and inhabitants from the destructive effects of fire. While being extremely useful, Fire also has the potential to have devastating effects on both human life, economic  stability and building fabric. Records show that over 30% of businesses suffering a major incident are forced to close within 12 months.

There are many Fire Protection Products on the market today which allow builders and specifiers to protect the structural fabric of a building to avoid it falling down under the impact of fire and to contain fire to avoid it spreading between different areas throughout a building. Some of the key manufacturers of these products include Promat, British Gypsum, Knauf, Rockwool and TBA Firefly. What is key when you are considering any fire protection products is that they have been tested to meet your requirements in terms of fire rating. There are two main elements to fire rating – Integrity which stops the spread of flame and Insulation which stops the transfer of heat. Both of these factors have the ability to cause combustion and thus aid the spread of a fire.

Supalux and Masterboard are fire protection boards manufactured by Promat and are one of the most effective building board products on the market today for providing passive fire protection. They are a Class 0/Class 1 non (Supalux) and limited (Masterboard) combustible building board manufactured from calcium silicate and fibre reinforced. Supalux and Masterboard are ideal for fire rated timber and metal stud partitions and ceilings; single skin fire rated walls, fire protection to mezzanine floors  and timber floors; wall linings, ceiling linings and metal frame suspended ceilings, encasements of structural steel columns and beams and fire rated ductwork; construction and upgrading of timber doors where a fire rating is required; fire protection of soffits; swimming pool ceilings; wall and roof linings; soffit, porch and canopy linings; service ducts and pipe covers; boiler cupboards and airing cupboard linings.

British Gypsum manufacture two main types of fire protection boards – Glasroc F Multiboard and Glasroc F Firecase. Glasroc F Multiboard is available in 6mm, 10mm and 12.5mm thicknesses and and a sheet size of 2400 x 1200mm. British Gypsum Multiboard, as it name would suggest is a versatile, fire rated building board suitable for building all types of partitions and ceilings. The flexibility of the 6mm boards means it is also suitable for building curved partitions up to a radius of 600mm. Glasroc F Multiboard is Class 0 and non combustible and can provide up to 120 minutes fire proofing. Multiboard is also suitable for semi-exposed applications. Glasroc F Firecase, similar to Multiboard, is a Class 0, non combustible board. Used predominantly for the encasement of structural steel, Glasroc F Firecase can give up to 180 minutes fire proofing.

Cement Particle Boards are constructed from wood and cement, have a smooth grey appearance, and are Class 0 Fire Rating. Cement Particle Board is resistant to moisture and thus can be used in external and semi-external applications.
