Foil Insulation
One of the most efficient ways to insulate your loft is by using a Multifoil or Multi Layer Foil Insulation. Brand names of this include Tri-Iso Super 10, Thinsulex TLX Silver and Euroform Gen X. Multilayer Insulation is an extremely efficient way of insulating your loft, and for example, in the case of Tri-Iso Super 10, gives a thermal performance equivalent to using 210mm of conventional mineral wool insulation. Thus Multifoil Insulation can offer substantial space saving advantages as it is generally 3-5 times thinner than loft roll insulation. This can give the added advantage of allowing traditional features to be retained such as exposed beams. Another advantage of Multifoil Insulation over Mineral Wool is that it contains no irritant fibres making it far more pleasant to install. Multifoil Insulation is also tear resistant, rot proof, does not weaken over time and can be cut with a craft knife. Multi Foil Insulation such as Tri-Iso Super 10 is known as Multi Layer Insulation since it is made up of 19 different layers – 8 foam layers, 6 reflective films, 3 wadding layers and 2 external reflective foils.
There are a number of different types of Multifoil Insulation. Tri-Iso Super 10/Thinsulex TLX Silver and Euroform Gen X are for use in pitched roofs and can be fixed both over or under rafters using a staple gun. This can be cut using only a craft knife and is thus extremely quick and easy to install. Triso Super 10, Alumaflex and Superquilt at 25-30mm provides the same thermal performance as using in excess of 200mm of traditional insulation and is effective both in summer and winter months.
Triso Sols is for use under hot water underfloor heating systems and below screeds in standard floors. Easily laid, eliminating thermal bridging and reflecting heat back into the room. A squared grid on the face facilitates the easy laying of underfloor heating pipes and at 7mm thick is ideal for use in renovations where maximising headroom is a major factor. It is made up of 6 foam layers with 4 reflective internal films and 2 metallic external films.
Triso TB80 supplementary insulation for roofs and walls. 10mm thick and when used behind plasterboard will give a Euroclass Fire Rating of B-s1 d0. Thermally welded, semi rigid and easy to install.
