Insulation Boards
There are a multitude of Insulation Boards used in the construction of new buildings and the refurbishment of old. They are used to provide thermal insulation to the walls, floors and soffits within a building and constitute either expanded polystyrene, extruded polystyrene, polyiscyanurate (PIR) or phenolic insulation board. They generally all come in 8ft x 4ft (2400mm x 1200mm) sheets, although there are a couple of exceptions to the rule, and a variety of thicknesses from 20mm to 300mm. As is to be expected with such a wide spectrum of products, they also range in cost from the very cheapest polystyrene sheets to the most expensive fire retardant phenolic insulation board.
There are many different manufacturers of Insulation Boards – Kingspan, Celotex, Ecotherm and Xtratherm are the 4 market leaders in extruded polystyrene and polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation board production.
Jablite, Kay-Metzeler and Springvale are 3 of the manufacturers of Expanded Polystyrene Insulation Sheets. These are a cheaper type of insulation board and generally used for insulating floors, however offer different thermal properties to the more expensive polyisocyanurate (PIR) and phenolic ranges. The two main types of polystyrene floor insulation sheet are SDN (Standard Density) which is also referred to as EPS70 and HDN (High Density) which is also referred to as EPS100.
All of these insulation boards give a varying level of Thermal Insulation, ranging from 0.030 W/mK to 0.020 W/mK thermal conductivity – the lower the value, the better the level of thermal insulation.
