Loft Insulations
The most common and easiest way to maximize the Energy Efficiency and improve the Acoustics of your home is to Insulate your Loft. This can be done with various Insulation Materials – Glass Fibre Insulation Roll, PIR Insulation Board or Multifoil Insulation Roll.
The cheapest, most common and easiest to source is Glass Fibre Insulation Loft Roll. This is manufactured by Knauf Insulation, Isover Insulation (part of the Saint Gobain Group who also own British Gypsum and Jewsons) to name but 2. Knauf call their product Loft Roll, while Isover call it Spacesaver Roll. Both come in a range of thicknesses from 100mm up to 200mm. Loft Roll Insulation is a lightweight, low density (circa 10kg/m3), flexible and non combustible glass mineral wool insulation. Loft Roll Insulation can be supplied uncut (combi cut) which is perforated at 600 and 400mm intervals or pre cut (ready cut) into either 2 x 570mm or 3 x 380mm widths.
One of the most efficient ways to insulate your loft is by using a Multifoil or Multi Layer Insulation. Brand names of this include Tri-Iso Super 10, Thinsulex TLX Silver and Euroform Gen X. Multilayer Insulation is an extremely efficient way of insulating your loft, and for example, in the case of Tri-Iso Super 10, gives a thermal performance equivalent to using 210mm of conventional mineral wool insulation. Thus Multifoil Insulation can offer substantial space saving advantages as it is generally 3-5 times thinner than loft roll insulation. This can give the added advantage of allowing traditional features to be retained such as exposed beams. Another advantage of Multifoil Insulation over Mineral Wool is that it contains no irritant fibres making it far more pleasant to install. Multifoil Insulation is also tear resistant, rot proof, does not weaken over time and can be cut with a Stanley knife. Tri-Iso Super 10 is known as Multi Layer Insulation since it is made up of 19 different layers – 8 foam layers, 6 reflective films, 3 wadding layers and 2 external reflective foils.
