The Benefits of Building Your Own Home

The Benefits of Building Your Own Home

People often write-off the idea of building their own home because they automatically assume it will be too expensive, take up too much of their time and of course, be a much bigger project than they can handle - especially if they have a full-time job or children to look after.

While we can’t argue that there is work involved in building your own home, we can promise that the tens of thousands of people who do it every year in the UK are over the moon with the finished product. Below we highlight just a few of the benefits of building your own home.

Can Building Your Own Home Be Quicker Than Buying?

Can Building Your Own Home Be Quicker Than Buying?

It will take time to draw up design plans, find a reputable builder and get your new home built but buying an already built house can be a lengthy process too. Finding a mortgage deal, waiting for it to get approved, going to viewings, getting your offer accepted and having the survey done can all take months and that doesn’t even take into account the fact that you’re right back at square one should your offer fall through. If managed properly, building your own home really doesn’t have to take much longer than buying a house and it eliminates a lot of the stress of doing so.

How many times have you been to view a house and though it would be perfect if only the spare bedroom was a bit bigger or there was an extra bathroom or the kitchen and dining room was open plan? Possibly the biggest benefit of building your own home is the fact that everything will be 100% to your taste.

Your Home Will Be Unique

It would be incredibly difficult not to notice that hundreds of new-builds are popping up in every town and city as the population continues to increase across the UK. Although this is great because it means that there is more housing available, unfortunately, as blocks of these properties are often built at the same time, they are all designed to the exact same spec and therefore look identical. Building your own home means that you can create something unique that has character and boasts individual detail.

With so many houses being built in bulk, the quality of materials used can vary to keep costs low. When building your own home you can control this and choose the materials. From the concrete blocks that are used to the insulation and ceilings, you can be rest assured that your home has literally been built to last.

Levy Cuts Make Self-Build Houses More Affordable

Levy Cuts Make Self-Build Houses More Affordable

As of February 2014, self-builders have become exempt from paying a levy which up until now was placed on most new buildings over a certain size. The previous charge had the potential to add a huge expense to the cost of building your own home. For example, a 4 bedroom house that is 150 metres in size was previously liable to pay £15,000 in community infrastructure levy if their council was charging £100 per square metre for residential development in that area.

The levy was axed because the government is keen to help aspiring self-builders get their projects off the ground and now makes the prospect a lot more affordable.
