Tanking Membranes

Tanking Membranes

Tanking is used to describe the process of creating tank-like seals as protection from water on walls, predominantly below ground level.

Building Regulations state that any tanking membrane be applied to any new builds below ground, but that is not to say that any tanking kit can’t be used on any existing building. Tanking sheets is predominantly used to prevent water making its way into basements, cellars as well as prevent any prevalent problems with rising damp.

Tanking walls or tanking a cellar either uses standard damp-proof membranes or a liquid coating. Whichever type of tanking kit that’s used will depend on the type of water damage (and extent of which) as well the specific building requirements.

Tanking membranes consist of plastic sheets which are fixed onto the internal faces of walls, which are subsequently sealed with tape. Tanking paint (such as tanking slurry) are typically used for larger, more spacious areas, which can simply be applied with a brush. Tanking slurry can be applied to floors as well.
