Acoustic Pipe Insulation
Acoustic pipe insulation can be useful in both commercial and residential buildings as a noise reduction technique. There are two types of noise caused by pipes within buildings, breakout noise and radiant noise. Breakout noise is the sound coming through the walls of a building into a living space or a place of business. In the case of pipes, it is often caused by the movement of water or other liquids through the pipes.
This can be a tricky issue to resolve, often necessitating the removal of sections of your wall. The other type of noise, radiant noise, is caused by the expansion of the pipes within your heating system. This is more common in older properties or properties with antiquated heating systems.
In terms of general pipe insulation there are a variety of options on the market including padding, tapes, supports, and foil backed insulation. These options can be used within various industries, including heating, plumbing and industrial. They will work on both residential and large scale industrial piping. For specifically acoustic pipe insulation your options are a little more limited with options involving wraps, sheets and underlays.
All of these products are designed to be wrapped tightly around pipes, giving both thermal and acoustic absorption. Reducing the ability for both breakout and radiant noise to travel through walls would be of tremendous benefit to both homeowners and business owners. These products can be used both in the installation of a new build, such as to reduce breakout noise within walls, and as part of a refurbishment in older houses, to try and limit the sounds of radiant noise caused by an outdated plumbing network. In addition to acoustic pipe insulations, there are also specialist tapes and adhesives to attach these products to your pipes. It’s vital that the pipe is properly covered by the wrap, with an overhang, and that the wrap is closely sealed to the pipe, to absorb as much sound as possible.
At Building Materials Nationwide we sell the iKoustic MuteWrap FT55AL, a visco-elastic membrane, designed to wrap around pipes and offer soundproofing support. As it is a viscous material, partway between a solid and liquid, the MuteWrap has elastic properties that allow it to be moulded around pipework. It offers effective sound dampening, and due to its high mass will also reduce airborne noise too. The iKoustic MuteWrap comes in 5500mm x 1200mm x 12.5mm.
