Rockwool TCB Cavity Barrier - Enhanced Fire Protection
Fire Resistance Ratings and Building Regulations
Rockwool TCB Cavity Barriers are rigorously tested and assessed to ensure they meet and exceed the strict fire resistance requirements set out in building regulations. These barriers achieve an impressive fire resistance rating of up to 60 minutes for both integrity and insulation, surpassing the minimum requirements for cavity barriers in external walls, party walls, and timber frame construction.
The exceptional fire resistance ratings of these cavity barriers contribute to creating safer buildings and demonstrate a commitment to meeting the highest standards of fire safety in construction projects.
Uses
Rockwool TCB Cavity Barriers are an essential component in fire protection systems for both residential and commercial buildings. These barriers are specifically designed for use in external wall cavities, party wall cavities, and timber frame construction. Their primary purpose is to prevent the rapid spread of fire and smoke through concealed spaces, which can quickly compromise a building's structural integrity and put occupants at risk.
By compartmentalising cavities and sealing off potential fire paths, Rockwool TCB Cavity Barriers help to contain fires, limit damage, and provide crucial extra time for evacuation and fire-fighting efforts. These barriers are particularly important in multi-story buildings, where the risk of vertical fire spread is higher.
In addition to their fire protection properties, Rockwool TCB Cavity Barriers also contribute to a building's thermal efficiency and acoustic performance by reducing air leakage and sound transmission through cavities, helping ensure regulatory compliance and create safer, more resilient structures.
Installation Tips and Best Practices
Tools required:
- Hammer
- Sharp insulation knife or saw
- Staple gun
Steps:
1.
Position the cavity barrier as construction progresses. Do not retrofit.
2.
Ensure joints and intersections are closely butted for a continuous fire seal.
3.
For vertical applications, fix both flanges to the inner leaf at 150mm centres using staples or clout nails. Compress the barrier with the outer cavity wall.
4.
For horizontal applications, fix only the top flange of the polythene sleeve.
5.
If cutting is necessary, cut slightly oversize for a tight butt joint. Do not remove the sleeve.
6.
Fix flanges to position the barrier and prevent movement during construction.
7.
Filled external wall cavities generally do not require cavity barriers.
8.
For partially filled cavities, cut back the insulation to compression-fit the barrier between the inner and outer leaves. Close the wall head at the eaves level with the TCB Cavity Barrier.
