What is the difference between floorboards and loft boards?

The clue is in the name. Floorboards are laid on the floor, usually as a base layer which the main floor will be laid upon. Loft boards are mainly fitted to the roof or on the floor of a loft and are an effective way of insulating your roof. They can be a great way to increase the space in many houses, so are essential for any major building projects.

Can you insulate under floorboards?

Insulating underneath floorboards is a perfectly viable option to prevent heat escaping from a property. Adding insulation under floorboards will largely depend on the type of floor and type of building you’re dealing with. For new-build houses, under-floor insulation will normally be laid already. However, for existing houses, adding insulation beneath floorboards can be slightly more difficult, especially if there’s a lack of space underneath.

There are a variety of methods to go about this including digging out existing concrete to add insulation underneath or installing insulation over the concrete. Most guides to underfloor insulation would suggest the latter option as it is the least disruptive and most cost-effective for builders and customers alike.

How do you install loft boards?

Installing loft boards is a straightforward job for an experienced builder. Firstly, it is important to check the area in the loft to ensure it is well-ventilated. It’s also important to have all the required equipment ready to use such as PPE, a screwdriver, and a tape measure. The main things to focus on when installing loft boards are the measurements. Getting the measurements incorrect can cause the entire job to fail.

When installing the loft boards, make sure they are perpendicular to the joists or trusses, and lay the first board down, securing along the back edge. The front edge of the board cannot be secured until the second board is laid down. Repeat this process across the area you want to board.
