Breather

Breather

Breathable roof membrane – or more specifically, breather membrane – is installed on the outer side of insulation. By installing breather either over or under counter-battens on a pitched roof, this allows water vapour to escape a building without the need for any ventilation, as well as preventing any rain from entering the building.

Damp in buildings can cause serious problems, including:

  • Mould growth
  • Mildew
  • Damage to surfaces
  • Slip hazards
  • Corrosion
  • Poor insulation
  • Staining

By using breathable membranes in an external wall or in roof constructions where the cladding might be letting water in, you are using a completely vapour permeable and water-resistant material.

Waterproof breathable membranes prevents moisture, dust and snow (that may have seeped through the cladding) from making its way into the structure of the building. Its air permeability allows ventilation of the structure to go on, thereby preventing condensation. Roof breather membranes and other specific products such as Tyvek breather membrane can also improve the thermal efficiency of a building.

Breather membrane for walls can either be supported or unsupported. To ensure maximum efficiency, all joints should be properly sealed with tape to prevent air leakage.
