7x2 Timber: Popular Uses and Types Available
7x2 timber is popularly used within structural work in building projects, available in strength-graded and treated options to ensure long-lasting performance. In this guide from Building Materials Nationwide, we’ll explore how timber sizing works within the UK, the types of 7x2 timber on sale, and some of its popular uses within a building project.
How is 7x2 Timber Sold in the UK?
Within the UK, all products including timber must be sold in metric measurements, typically in mm. This means that while imperial dimensions like 7x2 remain prevalent, all comparable timber in the UK will be listed as 175mm x 47mm. This isn’t a 1 to 1 comparison (177.8mm x 50.8mm would be more accurate) but it’s the closest option available. When purchasing all but rough-sawn green timber, it’s important to bear in mind that the dimensions of what you buy will be lower than what is listed on the specifications.

Nominal vs Actual Timber Sizes
Timber is sold at nominal sizes in mm, essentially the size that they were originally cut to after felling. This product, known as green timber, boasts a high moisture content and will shrink over time, making it unsuitable for a lot of construction tasks. In order to make timber more consistent, it will typically be kiln-dried before being sold. This process will take the moisture level below 20%, effectively shrinking the wood. In cases where the wood has been planed its dimensions will also be smaller.
What Lengths is 7x2 Timber Sold in?
The lengths of 7x2 timber available will vary depending on your supplier but will tend to range between 2 and 5 metres. Our range of structural 7x2 timber comes in lengths of 2.4m, 3m, 3.6m, 4.2m, and 4.8m.
What Types of 7x2 Timber Are Available?
When buying timber within the UK, alongside the traditional rough-sawn options there will be a couple of other types available, that will bring their own specific benefits.
When you buy a rough-sawn ungraded 7x2 timber piece, you’ll have no guarantees about the quality of the wood, making it unsuitable for use within any strength-based or load-bearing constructions. When relying on timber for strength and consistency, buying a strength-graded beam is necessary. For softwood timber, the grades commonly sold within the UK are C16 and C24, with C24 being the stronger of the two. Strength-graded timber will be machine-tested to ensure strong and dependable support.
Softwood timber can quickly rot when exposed to moisture and is also at risk from wood-burrowing insects. When looking to use 7x2 timber externally, you should opt for a pressure-treated option, sometimes called tanalised timber. This wood will have been coated and filled with preservatives, allowing it to be used outdoors and in locations with a risk of moisture or insect attack.
What Would 7x2 Timber Be Used For?
Alongside general usage, there are a couple of specific applications for 7x2 timber within a building project.
Floor Joists
A strength-graded 7x2 timber could be used for floor joists within a construction. Normally used as part of a suspended timber floor within older houses, C16 or C24-graded timber beams can safely support the weight of a floor. If there is any risk of moisture within the basement of a building then it would be sensible to also opt for a treated model.
Carcassing Work
Carcassing timber is used for structural work on a property. Strength-graded 7x2 timber would be suitable for a variety of carcassing tasks, with C16 or C24 options able to offer load-bearing support within some structures. In external-facing elements or places with a high risk of moisture treated timber should be used to ensure longevity.
