One of the UK’s major paint manufacturers, Crown Paints produces both retail and trade paints for use around a home or building. In this guide from Building Materials Nationwide, we’ll look at the full range of crown paints, including their other companies Sandtex and Sadolin and their trade options.

Crown Paints: A Traditional UK Paint Manufacturer

Crown Paints are one of the major paint manufacturers in the UK, operating out of Lancashire since the 1850s, and today owned by the Hempel Group. They produce both mass-market and trade paints, with different paints offered by each. As a brand, they have invested in paint innovations such as breatheasy, alongside working to improve the sustainability of their products and work with a range of charities.

The Crown Paint Range

The current Crown Paint range is split into five different paint types, with more specialist options available from their trade brand.

Walls and Ceilings

Crown Paint offers a standard wall and ceiling emulsion in a full spectrum of colours. With a choice of matt or silk finishes, there are 80 shades to choose from, from subdued whites and creams to more vibrant pinks and yellows. The entire range is made from vegan ingredients (in contrast to other major paint brands) and boasts a trademarked breatheasy formulation that is 99% solvent-free. This can help to reduce issues that can come with exposure to some paints, especially benefitting the asthmatic and those with allergies. This water-based paint will be applied in two coats.

Easyclean

Crown easyclean paint is designed to be durable and washable. Within the easyclean range, there are standard matt emulsions which will be perfect for high-intensity environments like hallways or children's bedrooms. They can also be used on metal and wood surfaces. In addition, Crown offer easyclean paints specifically designed for either kitchens or bathrooms. Crown bathroom paint comes with an anti-mould formulation helping to avoid issues with dampness and mould growth that can occur in humid environments. Its colours range from the traditional brilliant white to the darker rebel. Crown kitchen paint comes with grease guard technology to help keep your kitchen walls pristine, meaning they can simply be wiped clean after cooking.

Crafted

Crafted is Crown’s luxury paint, offering carefully selected colours in a selection of finishes. Within the Crafted range, flat matt emulsions offer a smooth and attractive surface around a house, the perfect choice for a living room or a dining room. There is also a range of suede textured paints, with colours like chocolate and soft grey leaving a soft textured finish on a wall. You’ll also find lustrous metallics, giving a metallic finish to interior walls. While it doesn’t offer as many colours, Crafted paints are the closest available option to discontinued Crown period paints.

Elle Decoration

Crown’s Elle Decoration range is a collaboration between Crown Paints and Elle Decoration Magazine, designed to offer a stylish and modern look for internal walls. These will all be flat matt emulsions, and can also be applied to woodwork.

Wood and Metal

Crown also offers a specific wood and metal paint, which is available in eggshell, satin, and gloss finishes. These will be either water-based or solvent-based, with options like aquaflow satinwood which can be used for interior and exterior surfaces, alongside one-coat gloss for a quick and shiny finish. These can be used for the woodwork and metal around a house, such as skirting boards or metal railings.

Crown Trade Paint

Crown offers trade paint under its “Crown Trade” label, though these paints can be purchased by anyone. This will include interior emulsions in a huge range of colours, alongside specialist paints for antibacterial applications, fire resistance, and other surfaces like metal and wood. Crown also produces primers through their trade brand, for thorough paint jobs. You’ll find a full range of exterior paint, with masonry paint and other protective coatings.

Crown Floor Paint

If you are looking for Crown floor paint you’ll need to purchase them through their professional site. They sell polyurethane and epoxy floor paints, with options for concrete floors, in addition to anti-slip floor paint.

Luxury Paint

Other Paint Companies Owned by Crown

Rather than sell their own exterior paint on their standard consumer-facing site, Crown Paints owns Sandtex, a UK manufacturer of durable exterior paints for masonry, wood, metal, and PVC. These will be designed to offer 15 years of excellent performance, resistant to rain, wind, and dirt.

They also own Sadolin, a wood stain and protection company, that offers a range of attractive products for external wood such as decking, furniture, and sheds.
